Tent Air Conditioner Review

The Tent air conditioner is a great idea in theory, so we did the research on Tent air conditioners to see if a portable camping air conditioner can do a cool job and is worth the investment.

There are times when temperatures can turn camping tents into saunas and sleep becomes wish full thinking which leads campers to consider an air conditioner for camping.

When RV camping finding suitable portable air conditioners is easily achievable because they are easily transported and they have specialized RV air conditioners that can be fitted into the RV ceiling.

If your backpacking and camping with a lightweight free standing tent that can be used without the ran fly your happier than the Rver by leaving the rain fly off and spending an awesome night stargazing.

Its you guys that have the large family tents that suffer from the hot weather when camping in a tent that needs a solution; so lets look at the camping tent air conditioner options.

Tent Air Conditioner Review

When searching for tent air conditioners it will become apparent there are not a lot of choices out there that are best suited for camping tents. We checked them out to find the best and here is what we found.

KoolerAire Portable Camping Air Conditioner

The 12 volt portable air conditioner is a suitable choice for camping that is affordable compared to other portable air conditioners.

This unit cools using a Coleman or igloo ice chest with the unit needing to be placed just inside the top, and plugged into the 12V power supply.

When we first looked at this unit it was the ideal air condition for camping tents, in theory! Although consumer reports were not encouraging for the prospective buyer.

Most comments made about this air conditioner were very negative, such as, an ice box with a fan would work better, does not work at all or only blows a small amount of cool air, with most wishing they could give less than one star in reviews.

Based on what I have found I'd avoid buying this 12 Volt Portable Air Conditionerportable camping air conditioner completely, which is a shame because the idea is great.

O2 Cool 1086 Cool Box Personal Air Conditioner

The 02 cool box is another unit that can be used as a camping air conditioner that runs on a variety of power sources which includes being used with rechargeable batteries or D cell batteries.

This conditioner has three sources for cooling: a fan, water mister, and an ice cold breeze that lowers the surrounding air temperature up to 30 degrees F.

I see these tent air conditioners as a more viable option that above and it does rate better than the KoolerAire portable camping air condition.

Reviews pointed out that if the fan is blowing on you it works well and others state its ok. Like the above conditioner it gets plenty of negative remarks but it does manage to pick up a few 4 star ratings out of five which is better than any other unit we have reviewed.

The O2 1086 Cool Boxtent air conditioner costs around $90 and may be worth checking out, although its still doesn't have consumer reports we would like to see.

Other Options For Hot Weather Camping

Other Options for ways for tent cooling includes:

  • Buy a more expensive portable air conditioner that will cost well over $100 that would be similar to a portable unit used in an office.
  • 12v or battery operated cooling fans are a much cheaper option and will help cool campers whilst sleeping to take the edge of the heat. These do what they say they are meant to do and consumers agree that many tent cooling fans are worth the money and do a cool job. These can be picked up from $10-$35.
  • The option I like is sleeping under the stars with the flysheet taken off, if the tent is an inner pitching first design that uses mesh.
  • Sleeping under a sun shade or shelter with a mosquito net attached if mozzys and bugs are an issue.

Conclusion

There are a few choices when searching for a tent air conditioner, although the portable camping air conditioner types we have looked at, do not suffice.

Rather than use tent air conditioners we would go along with using a tent fan to cool campers down.

The other option that works well, if its practical is to buy and pack away a portable tent shelter or canopy and sleep under the stars, which turns hot weather camping into a blessing.
