About MSR Stoves?

Mountain Safety Research (MSR) is a family owned company that has grown to be one of the most respected outdoor gear manufacturers in the world for hiking, camping and backpacking.

msr camp stoves

Amongst other great camping gear, such as quality camping tents and Therm-a-Rest pads (the world's first self-inflating mattress); The MSR Camp Stoves in our opinion are a cut above the rest for price and quality whilst maintaining a great reputation amongst us hikers, backpackers and campers for over 15 years.

Various MSR Camp Stoves

MSR Whisperlite Stove

One of the great camping cook stoves msr produce is the award winning MSR WhisperLite Stove. This stove has the shaker jet technology that makes cleaning as simple as shaking the stove. MSR has perfected the flame control on the whisperlite to allow fuel usage to be minimum whilst providing efficient heat. A weighted pin inside the jet pushes away any debris or soot to reduce maintenance involved.

For minimalist backpackers, this 14-ounce stove is extremely compact, fitting nicely into a 1.5-liter MSR pot. The stainless steel legs/pot supports fold down to fit easily inside most cooking pots.

It is mechanically identical to the MSR International (below) except for an alternate fuel nozzle and the absence of a wicking cup around the bottom for lighting less flammable fuels.

MSR WhisperLite International

MSR WhisperLite International Stove, is similar to the above msr whisperlite stove with the option of burning alternative fuels like kerosene or unleaded gasoline. However, it's best used with white gas for fuel to burn cleaner, although other fuels have advantages. The extra advantage is a strengthened fuel supply hose. The fuel bottle is not included with the stove although when buying you can choose from several sizes to suit your needs. Minimum Weight 11.5 oz / 330 g Packaged Weight 15.5 oz / 460 g

Whisperlite MSR stoves, have another great feature that allows the stove to be kept inside the MSR cook sets to help keep things compact when backpacking.

MSR XGK EX Stove - Expedition Stove

The next MSR camp stoves we have chose to include in the review is the MSR XGK EX Stove. Another quality backpack stove from MSR. Valuable for people who need true multi-fuel capability (military, international travelers, expeditions, etc.), rugged dependability, and who do not worry about any flame setting other than maximum heat output.

Consumers recommend buying a replacement pump for back up (MSR Standard Pump for Liquid Fuel Stoves) since this part is made of plastic. If using a lot whilst being in remote areas play it safe. Although, this stove is still a great piece of kit.

MSR Pocket Rocket - Lightweight Camping Cook Stoves MSR Pocket Rocket Stovemsr camp stoves is a compact and powerful butane stove and the lightest out of all the MSR Camp Stoves here. This is a great stove if you need a really light backpack load; At 3 ounces or 85 grams it's pretty light. It offers fast and simple lighting, with no need for priming, pressurizing or maintenance, and it will boil a litre of water in under 3.5 minutes. The glove-friendly controls allow precise flame adjustment and stability, while the tri-sectional Windshield clip protects the flame in light wind gusts. It uses clean burning MSR Iso Pro fuel.

Backpacker Magazine tester Andy Dappen, stated, This midget flamethrower is one of the lightest backpacking stoves available, and the best cartridge stove I've used.

MSR Dragonfly Stove

Probably one of the best all purpose backpack stoves by MSR. The MSR Dragonfly Stovemsr camp stoves uses liquid-fuel , and stands out for flame control. The MSR dual-valve design offers an unrivaled range of flame control; simmer to boil with a twist of the flame adjuster. Since it came on the market in 1998, it has won numerous awards for its innovative dual-valve design, which offers an unrivaled range of continuous and immediate flame control. Simmer a delicate sauce over a candle flame or melt snow quickly over a blowtorch with a twist of the flame adjuster. The continued popularity and performance of the DragonFly can be attributed to the many features invented by MSR.

The DragonFly Stove runs on a variety of fuels.

Weighs in at 13.9 ounces. Although, some won't rate this above the MSR Whisperlite stove due to the noise, but we all have our preferences with gear. However, the flexibility for fuel and simmer options wins many of us.

While there are nice things about these msr stoves, it has been suggested there are some extra maintenance steps that, if neglected, can cause problems in the field.

MSR Reactor Stove

The whole stove system fits inside the pot with its locking Lexan lid and handle for easy packing and no rattling in your pack. Minimum weight is 21 ounces/595 grams and packaged 21.6 ounces/612 grams.

The MSR Reactor Stove Systemmsr whisperlite stove boils 1 litre of water in under 3 minutes. A cool feature is the match-free push-button ignition system. An internal pressure regulator ensures a consistent flame in all temperatures. This stove uses MSR IsoPro fuel in a 8-ounce canister.

This is a very cool windproof system camping cook stove. This is a good rival for the Jetboil Flash Personal Cooking Systemmsr camp stoves

Recent Awards include: Editors' Choice 2007: Backpacker Magazine, Best in Gear Award: Rock and Ice, ISPO Outdoor Award, I.D. Winner 2007 Design Review

In comparison to the other liquid fuel MSR camp stoves, the MSR Reactor merely whisper's when cooking breakfast and morning coffee.
