MSR Whisperlite - Backpacking Liquid Fuel Stove

MSR Whisperlite Stove

One of the great cook stoves MSR produce is the award winning MSR WhisperLite Stove. This stove features what MSR call the shaker jet which makes it pretty easy to clean by just giving the stove a shake.

The company has perfected the flame control on the whisperlite to allow fuel usage to be minimum whilst providing efficient heat. The pin inside the jet is designed to reduce maintenance needed by pushing away unwanted soot preventing the stove from getting clogged up.

For lightweight backpackers, it's compact enough and can fit inside the MSR 1.5-liter pot and other pots .

It's very similar to the International Whisperlite model except it doesn't have a wicking cup for lighting less flammable fuels and an alternate fuel nozzle.

Weight: 10.9 oz / 309 g (stove and pump)

MSR WhisperLite International Multi Fuel

MSR WhisperLite International Multi Fuel

This WhisperLite is the International model which is similar to the above MSR whisperlite stove with the option of burning alternative fuels like kerosene or unleaded gasoline.

Although the stove can be used with various fuels it's best used with white gas for fuel to burn cleaner, however, other fuels have advantages also. An extra advantage with the International is a strengthened fuel supply hose.

Once the stove is primed which can take a couple of minutes to get the flame right, it takes about 3.5 mins to boil a liter of water using white gas, and more if using other fuels.

If your travelling to other countries where types of fuel can be an problem to get hold of, then this is a great option. Also, for those that need a stove that performs well at high altitudes or cold conditions will find the Whisperlite International is well worth considering.

Fuel: White gas, kerosene, auto, Isobutane-Propane

Whisperlite Universal - Canister And Liquid Type

Whisperlite Universal

The Universal is picking up recognition quickly from the top outdoor sites for its ability to fire up on liquid and canister fuel. It's like MSR have put the best of MSR camp stoves into one unit!

The major concerns would have been how well can it switch over from liquid to canister, will it produce more maintenance on the field? Will it be more bulky? And a few other questions people would have.

So far so good, most users have found switching fuel types easy enough, although thay have only been using one type or the other, which is what most of us will do whilst were on a trip. The only extra work that has to be done is switching over the fuel jets (3 types) and the adapter for using either liquid or canister fuel.

MSR have improved the supporting legs which will help for keeping it stable when using a cooking pot.

The universal isn't much bulkier and heavier than the other WhisperLites. Were talking about around 2 ounces in weight, the pot legs being larger and extra parts which makes the stove more stable and able to change from canister to liquid.

Basic Info

Suitable for: Lightweight Backpacking, Hiking, and Camping

Weight: 3 oz / 85 g

Fuel: MSR IsoPro Isobutane-Propane

Price:$39.95 - Backcountry.com

MSR Pocket Rocket - Lightweight Backpacking

MSR Pocket Rocket Stove

The MSR Pocket Rocket is a compact and powerful butane stove and the lightest out of all the MSR Camp Stoves here.

This is a great stove if you need a really light backpack load. At 3 ounces or 85 grams it's pretty light.

The Pocket rocket is quick and easy to fire up, with no need for priming, pressurizing or maintenance, and it will boil a litre of water in under 3.5 minutes.

The flame adjustment is easy enough to use and functions well, while the tri-sectional Windshield clip protects the flame in light guts of wind. The Pocket rocket works best using clean burning MSR Iso Pro fuel.

Overall, it's a handy lightweight stove and well worth the money which can be used for backpacking light or cooking a quick lunch when on the open road.

Basic Info

Suitable for: Backpacking, Camping

Weight: 1 lbs 2.2 oz / 515 g

Fuel: MSR IsoPro, Isobutane-Propane

Price: $159.95 - Backcountry.com

MSR Reactor - Rapid Boil Backpacking Choice

MSR Reactor Stove

The MSR Reactor Stove System boils 1 litre of water in about 3 minutes. It has a few useful and practical feature's including the match-free push-button ignition, an internal pressure regulator that ensures a consistent flame in all temperatures and a heat exchanger that protects the burner in windy weather conditions.

After using these MSR camp stoves they will pack very well together inside the cooking pot, making it a compact piece of kit that's easy to manage.

This MSR Stove is a good rival for the Jetboil Flash Personal Cooking System that you may want to consider comparing it to if your looking for rapid boiling time from a stove

The Reactor has had a lot of recognition and some awards from well known outdoor gear reviewers such as the Backpacker Magazine and Rock and Ice.

MSR Dragonfly Stove - Multi-Fuel

MSR Dragonfly

Probably one of the best all purpose stoves available from MSR is the Dragonfly that can be used with a variety of liquid-fuels like the Whisperlite, but stands out for it's great flame control.

The valve for this stove has been designed for those needing to control flame levels which works very well. It switches easily from simmer to boil with a twist of the flame adjuster.

Being able to control a flame in the way the Dragonfly does makes the stove function well if a person needs to cook a soup slowly or to boil a liter of water quickly for a coffee.

The DragonFly Stove can be fired up with a variety of fuels which makes it great for International adventures (like the whisperlite International) as well as for extremely low temperature activities.

Although, some won't rate this above the MSR Whisperlite stove due to the noise and being heavier, others rate it better for more fuel flexibility and it's simmer options .

While there are great features and functionality for these MSR camp stoves, it's been suggested there are some extra maintenance steps that, if neglected, can cause problems in the field.
