Martin Keen and Rory Fuerst founded the Keen shoe and boot manufacturing company in 2003 and it grew quickly to over 1000 retail stores in the US alone and was named the 'Launch of the Year' by the magazine "Footwear News" the same year for Keen shoes.

Today, the Keen name is well known in the European countries, North and Central America, New Zealand and Australia; adding more fame to the Portland, Oregon area where the Keen boots and shoes have been manufactured since 2006.

The Keen Inc. shoe company also gained a valuable person in 2006, when Kirk Richardson, former president of Nike, Inc. came on board as president.

Two years later, in 2008, James Curleigh joined the company after a long stint with Salomon Sports North America. Keen, Inc. has always been conscious of supporting recreational and social responsibility in the community.

When the 2004 tsunami devastated Asia, Keen Inc, donated their marketing budget to help with relief efforts. Their Hybrid Care program was an offshoot of this effort and today they are joined by 1KG More; Leave No Trace, The Conservative Alliance and Big City Mountaineers to preserve and protect the environment so that all may enjoy it.

The Hybrid Care program has donated over four million dollars to various organizations that support and conserve the environment.

Keen Pyrenees Hiking Boot keen hiking boots

The Keen Pyrenees hiking boot are one of the top of the line hiking boots for both men and women that Keen manufactures to handle all kinds of terrain and conditions.

These are a high cut waterproof boot with nubuck leather and breathable lining to keep your feet from becoming sweaty after hiking for a long time.

They are classified as light hiking, with the midsole made of EVA support heated plastic and urethane plate. The toe guard is patented with an outer sole that wraps around the toes and edges of the outer parts of the upper sole to protect them from the impacts and various abrasions that occur on the trail.

Both types have the S3 system that handles the shock, suspension and stability that affects the heel during the hike, therefore keeping the hiker safe. Keen hiking boots are also made with the foot beds that are removable and shaped to provide ample cushioning and arch support.

The heavy-duty rubber outsoles have a 4mm multidirectional lugs designed to channel the water away from the boot, this improves traction while hiking.

The main differences between the Keen men's and women's hiking boots and shoes are is the weight, with the Keen hiking shoes weighing just over two and a half pounds; the women's weighs a bit less and is higher cut.

There are mixed reviews between men and women with this style of Keen hiking boot. The pros are that the fit is better for women, but the men had issues with the fit, ability to wear and use for long term and the odd lacing configuration was troublesome.

Keen Tarquee Hiking Boot keen boots

The Tarquee hiking boot is another one of the Keen hiking boots that is made basically the same for both men and women.

Made for use as a light hiking boot, the Tarquee offers waterproof outside and a nylon mesh lining that wicks moisture away, along with the Nubuck leather upper sole.

The middle of the boot, the part that gives the most support is made of EVA material with a nylon support shank for stability. The height of the cup is middle height which gives more support to your ankles when hiking or climbing trails; this along with the lacing system and heel support allows more traction and for better footing.

Like other Keen hiking boots or hiking shoes, the support system gives great cushioning and allows room for orthotic supports if needed.

The lugs measure 4mm and are designed to give better traction and shed water and provide great traction during any hiking or backpacking you will do.

The outer sole is made of carbon rubber and are non-marking. There is little difference in the main construction of the men's and women's Keen hiking boot, except for the weight difference and the reviews. Reviews of the men's boot found that most were saying it did not wear quite as well as expected but the women said it was very comfortable and wears well.
