If you are planning to travel lightweight as a backpacker rather than car camping then buying a tent with minimal room will be more practical. You will be spending most the time on the move and your tent will be a sleeping quarters rather than living space.

The weight of your camping tents can be very important. If you are hiking you will want a light weight tent or even ultralight weight tent due to moving every one or two nights.

If you are staying on one site for a week and car camping, weight will not be of importance.

It may important for you if your having to spend time indoors, due to rain, that your camping tents height inside is sufficient. This can be an issue if you want your tent to become a "Home from Home" spending time relaxing and reading or with the family.

There are many designs and its kind of nice to choose a tent you find attractive, but foremost practical.

Buying a camping tent that is bright is very good for the feel inside of the tent as brightness feels more positive when you have to spend time inside due to bad weather. Why not stand out from the crowd that have the usual green or blue camping tents, although of course, it's primarily about being practical and comfortable.

Tent Features to Consider

Further considerations for your tent camping checklist of needs you may have, is having mesh doors that will protect you if needed from insects and will also provide enough air in the Tent to keep it fresh and ventilated. Most tents now have the mesh doors to protect you from insects and bugs, as a standard feature.

Finding a tent that has extra pockets to keep a torch light and your small belongings in is very useful, alongside a gear vestibule that can keep boots and other gear outside of the main tent but not getting wet.

Camping Tents were primarily Canvas Tents but our modern day tents are mainly synthetic material Nylon or Polyester. Todays fabrics used for tents are fortunately very strong.

Inner pitching tents/outer pitching tents are available. With an outer pitching camping tent you set up the flysheet from the outside first then set up the inside, useful when raining and can be set up with the inner already inside. With pitching an inner tent you have to put the flysheet after you have set up the inner tent and tent poles. Both inner tents and outer tents have there pros and cons.

You may find it useful to buy extra waterproof protection (seam sealer) for the seems on your tent. Even the best tents leak at the seams after some time, which makes it easier to protect a tent from day 1.

Three Season and Four Feason Tents

A three season tent can be a very good option for those who plan to camp only in the spring, summer and fall. In most cases, it will suit a camper just fine. However, winter camping often requires some extra protection. A four season tent can offer that.

As the name suggests, a four season tent can be used in all four seasons and has a number of features that makes it more comfortable than a traditional tent for winter camping. Those features include heavier poles to withstand the additional weight that may come with heavy snow or ice and more poles to prevent chances of sagging under snow.
