Family Size Tents

Size-Room-Weight-Features

This may seem obvious; how many adults and children will be sleeping in the family camping tent? I personally would advise to always go for a large family tent, well larger than the recommended capacity.

This will provide extra storage space for camping equipment or your lovely pet that needs some sleeping space. Storage space is important for us family campers.

The weight will not be an issue if you are car camping and planning to drive to your campsite. The extra room is always good. If you need an 8 person family size tent, then it is worth investing in a 9 or 10 person tent or choose a tent that is for one person above the amount planned for a trip

Would you like separate sleeping space from the children?

You have the option to choose one of the fantastic family dome tents or cabin style tents available that provides a separate living space if needed. Maybe you wish to have the comfort of being together. If you have a toddler you will want the young one to be with you.

A family tent can provide two to three sleeping quarters that prevents the need for buying an extra camping tent, and provides privacy for mom and dad. They are also a good option if you have teenagers that need their own privacy. For dome tents, the dome structure (geodesic) is built to hold well against adverse weather conditions because of the solid, lower well designed structure.

Would you like a section to set a table up to eat food if the weather is not so good? or room to play cards etc. Some of the best family size tents will allow you room between two domes or a great section also known as an awning (canopy) to sit and relax in the shade or to eat your tasty camping food.

Another option for extra room; Consider a screen tentfor yoyr camping table and chairs separate from the camping tent which may also be used for other outdoor activities at home.

Choosing a family camping tent with a vestibule will also provide space to store camping gear and kids stuff. A vestibule is a section between the front door of the tent before stepping into the living space. Most family dome tents provide this, but a cabin style will not need or have a vestibule.

A ground sheet protector (footprint) is a polyurethane or nylon sheet that goes under the base of your tent. Some use a tarp because they are cheap. A tent footprint costs less to replace than the tent itself so for a family tent that gets lots of use and abuse this is especially useful for protecting your family size tents.

Consider the size, height, and access for the family camping tent for father's that need more head room whilst inside the tent. Also, the height will allow all to have easier access for getting in and out of the tent.

Quality

Will you need to use your tent regularly? If so maybe invest in higher quality, family size tents. They may cost more but i have found what i spent provided much more comfort and valuable living space. A family camping tent will usually last a lot longer if your able to invest a little bit extra for the best family tent your money can buy. The quality tent brands are the best option out there for saving money long term and will always sell, or be given to a family member, when well looked after.

Your Budget

Deciding on how much money to spend on a family tent will always depend on the best tents you are able to afford. A lot of the higher priced tents are better quality but everyones budget is different. You are able to find pretty good family camping tents reasonably priced and still great quality.

Family Size Tents - Types

  • * Cabin-style tents: These upright styles offer the easiest in/out access of all tents. The near vertical walls create much livable space, which is a cool advantage. Some models come with family orientated features such as room dividers and an awning (or a vestibule door that can be staked out).
  • * Dome-style tents: these offer superior strength and wind-shedding abilities, both of which you'll appreciate on a stormy night. They stand tall, but their walls have more of a slope which slightly reduces livable space and head room.
  • * Screen rooms and sun shelters: They usually cover the camp picnic table or are pitched for a day at the beach, though they can double as sleeping shelters if needed. With all-mesh walls, screen houses excel in warm conditions and keep occupants shielded from bugs, but not rain.
